23rd National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic
Posted by Slatch, on 20 Feb 2009, category Disabled Sports News

Since our inception in 1999, Adaptive Adventures has sent our best instructors to volunteer at the DAV Winter Sports Clinic. This event helps in promoting rehabilitation by instructing veterans with disabilities in adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing, and introducing them to a number of other adaptive recreational activities and sports. For many newly injured veterans, including increasing numbers injured in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Clinic offers their first experience in winter sports and gives them the inspiration to take their rehabilitation to a higher level. This year our entire staff, several board members, and volunteers will once again contribute our efforts to this great event.

Each year, over 350 disabled veterans descend on the mountains of Colorado for a week of Adaptive skiing with mono-skis and bi-skis; instruction in adaptive Alpine (downhill) and Nordic (cross-country) skiing for stand-up skiers, including the visually impaired. Alternate activities including scuba diving, sled hockey, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, rock climbing, trap shooting, fencing, golf, Snow Cat/Gondola Rides and a trip to the Hot Springs; plus educational and instructional workshops on self-defense and other stimulating topics.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Teresa Parks at 970-263-5040. Volunteering for this event is a great way to show your appreciation for our disabled veterans and our country. It is an experience that you will never forget.
