Immigration discrimination?
Posted by Slatch, on 05/01/2009, category Disability Discrimination Blogs

Personally, I don't have a problem with the fact that it would be harder for me to immigrate to a country because I have a disability which could potentially place a burden on the healthcare resources of the country I wish to move to.

I'd qualify that by saying that in some cases it IS ridiculous, such as the doctor with the disabled daughter, who is clearly giving more back to the local healthcare service than he would be taking away.

But in principal... the whole immigration process IS an advanced form of discrimination with countries outside the EU picking the Europeans with the best standard of the native language, best qualifications and most to offer the country. We do the same. Heck, Australia gives you more points if your're under the age of 25 and there are massive restrictions on applying at all if you're over the age of 40.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to consider the potential cost to the health service as a factor *as long as* the process also takes into account the fact that the immigrant will probably be paying tax and contributing to the local community. That's where the process sometimes goes wrong, where just because a family includes someone disabled they are excluded.

But, y'know, I understand why it's something they need to consider.
